Tweak - check_file_age to check_file_modified

Out of the box the Nagios Plugins package has a check_file_age plugin.  Well, that only checks to see if the file has been modified in the last specified time period and alerts if the file has NOT changed recently.  I needed the exact opposite, to check to see if the file has been modified.

Nagios Event Handler - Restart Remote Service

I wrote a few quick posts on using Nagios Event_Handlers to restart a service on the local system.  Mostly I followed the example from the Nagios documentation, but it was a little tricky using SUDO to restart a service.  Once I solved that, the logical next step was to be able to restart a service on a REMOTE system with the event_handlers and NRPE.

Nagios Event Handlers

One of my pet projects is automate some responses to Nagios alerts.  Nagios has the eventhandler functionality built in for this case.  The simple case I had was to restart a service which was always flaky on my Nagios server.

Tweak: Using NagiosGraph's SHOW.CGI

Using NagiosGraph with Nagios can provide valueable information about your environment.  At times, you may want to show something on a different scale or limit the data seen within the graph.  Below are a few basics for manipulating NagiosGraph's show.cgi to customize the graph you are viewing.

Slingbox SOLO : Updated

Today I picked up the Slingbox SOLO while at BestBuy. Cost $180. I chose the SOLO for two reasons; I only wanted to use it with my cable box and to upgrade to the 3 device version is $300. I didn't see the need to buy more then I needed; at least not until I had actually scene one fo these in action.

Migrating Host - Adding Content

It has been a long few weeks and I haven't had much free time to post any content.  My biggest accomplishment was migrating this site and a few others to a new VPS host.   Thanks to the folks @ NeoSurge the site should be far more stable than my previous provider/VPS combo.

Windows 7 - Part 2 : Release Candidate

A While back I wrote a review of the Win7 Beta and said that it was the true replacement to XP. After installing and using the new Release Candidate my mind has not changed. For the record I installed the 64bit version. The installation process was effortless. All the drivers I required were installed removing the need to hunt a missing one down.

Vizio LCD TV

VO37LF

All I wanted was a quiet day watching movies and baseball. That didn't happen. I turn on the TV and nothing. So new tv time. I had no plans on doing so; so I had to spend time on the net researching and deciding. Do I buy a Sony which is basically an over priced Samsung? Do I buy the cheapest one I could find that's on sale? In the end I decided to find a TV that was close to what I had.

Find Unknown Hardware Device Drivers

Building, or rebuilding a PC with only the Windows Operating System CD on hand can be a headache.  Typically you will end up with a whole list of "unknown devices".  As this is a cruel world, one of them will be your Network Adapter so you cannot even get online to download the drivers.

Is a quad core cpu WORTH it in a laptop?

I'm looking into buying a new laptop. The large majority only offer dual core cpu's. Some manufacturers offer a quad core option but they are either drastically more expensive or are close to a ghz slower. So I ask the community;  What are your thoughts on this? Is a Core 2 Quad worth the extra money? Is a 2.0 ghz Quad worth more to me then a Dual core 2.93 ghz?
